Dr. Melissa Steinman
Bio
Dr. Melissa Steinman is a distinguished marine scientist, educator, and public servant with a remarkable career characterized by excellence, innovation, and a commitment to inspiring others.
She holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Portland State University (2024), and her academic journey includes dual bachelor’s degrees in Biology from Portland State University and Oceanography from the Florida Institute of Technology. Additionally, she earned a master’s in Teaching with Honors from Southern Oregon University.
Dr. Steinman’s dissertation and proposed post-doctoral research focus on the impacts of filter feeders on marine microbial communities. Using a myriad of tools to address questions across scale and time, this work draws on research collaborations that began when she was teaching.
As a former middle and high school Science, Math, and Career and Technical Education teacher, she developed innovative curricula that engaged students in oceanography, emergency services, construction, and ecotourism.
By highlighting the need for STEM skills in traditional trades, Dr. Steinman and colleagues secured over $700,000 in grant funding to enhance educational opportunities for her students in the “Blue Economy” of coastal Oregon.
Her education leadership extends beyond the classroom, presenting the model of STEM and CTE across the curriculum as a state and national model of excellence at scientific and teaching forums, such as The Oceanography Society and the National Science Teachers Association.
Dr. Steinman served in the U.S. Coast Guard, participating in key operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. She received multiple honors, including the Coast Guard Achievement Medal and Special Operations Service Ribbon, for her exemplary service.
Dr. Steinman also plays an active role in community leadership, supporting veterans through the Mission Continues nonprofit and advocating for underrepresented groups in science and technology.
