Dr. Jessica Smeltz

2025 Faculty Excellence Awardee

Bio

Dr. Jessica Smeltz is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Florida Institute of Technology. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from North Carolina State University, specializing in organometallic chemistry and catalysis.

Since joining Florida Tech, Dr. Smeltz has been instrumental in developing and enhancing chemistry education. She has led curriculum improvements, including the implementation of the Supplemental Instruction Program for General and Organic Chemistry, and has overseen the coordination of General Chemistry laboratory instruction.

Her dedication to teaching has been recognized with multiple teaching awards including being a four-time recipient of the Phi Eta Sigma Excellence in Teaching Award, the Kerry Bruce Clark Excellence in Teaching Award, the ACS Orlando Section Outstanding Four-Year College Teacher Award, and SGA’s Professor of the Year.

Outside of teaching she has also been awarded the Florida Tech Panther Award for her support of the Florida Tech Women’s Softball Team and received the 2024 Millersville University Young Alumni Achievement Award for her notable accomplishments in her field.

As Department Head, Dr. Smeltz continues to support faculty, oversee academic programs, and promote research initiatives within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Her leadership reflects a commitment to academic excellence and the professional development of students and faculty.
