What career or personal update would you like to give to your fellow Florida Tech Panthers alumni?

I work for the Southwest Florida Water Management District. After FIT I went on to get a MS in Geology with an emphasis in hydrogeology. I worked in Environmental consulting for 13 years then settled at the District. I currently live in a neighborhood with 6 other FIT alumni (not including me - 7 of us total). There are 3 couples, amongst this group, including my husband and myself that met at FIT and are still married 40 years later. We were all at FIT together and reconnected through the years and decided this was a good neighborhood to downsize to.

How did your time at Florida Tech help get you to where you are today?

It provided a good academic background and lifelong friends. Florida Tech helped me as a good base for my career and my whole family life.

What is your favorite Florida Tech memory?

"C" Building at the Southgate apartments. Its not just one memory - a place where a lot of other memories took place. It was where most of the fraternity lived - so a lot of activities and memories centered in and around that building.

Was there a mentor or professor who had a big impact on you personally and/or professionally?

Unfortunately I can't remember their name. First quarter we had an Oceanography overview class that really explained each of the branches of oceanography. I had planned to go into Chemical Oceanography when I first started - but was enthralled by the professor that described geology and geological oceanography. I've been a geologist ever since. Other people love plants - I love large rock formations. Individual rocks = meh - but the grand canyon is my happy place.

Please share any advice you have for current Florida Tech students.

Diversify. Take as many classes in as many different things as your major allows. I know curriculum is more limited nowadays (I coached 3 kids through college class schedules and prerequisites and when they were offered and how to graduate in under 5 years) But you never know what will really light your imagination and could change your trajectory.
