Karen Gathercole Class of 2017 Major: MBA- Accounting & Finance Current Home: Viera, Florida

What career or personal update would you like to give to your fellow Florida Tech Panthers alumni?

I'm currently serving as the Executive Director, Head of People for a Biotechnology Firm on the Space Coast. Vaxxinity is a start-up located at the Kennedy Space Center Life Sciences Building and we are pioneering new treatments for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. What continues to amaze me is the growth in Brevard County over the last 20 years and the new industries that are continuing to thrive in this area. My husband successfully runs his own business and raising our family in this county has been the best decision. One daughter left for college on a soccer scholarship and the other is starting EFSC this fall with their Dual Enrollment program through Viera High School. There is no end to great things in Brevard!

How did your time at Florida Tech help get you to where you are today?

The MBA opened the doorway for an Executive role. Understanding the finances of a Company, how to drive the bottom line, and use both left side/right side of my brain was the perfect addition to my Career. Most human resources professionals focus on the one area and don't consider rounding out their education to ensure they can function at the board room table.

What is your favorite Florida Tech memory?

Speaking to undergraduates at the College of Business. They were sponges and I loved showing them how a career in Human Resources can be "cool" and that I owed my success, in part, to Florida Tech.

Was there a mentor or professor who had a big impact on you personally and/or professionally?

Dr. Abe Walton from the College of Business and Dr. Brian Ehrlich when he was in charge of the Online Programs

Please share any advice you have for current Florida Tech students.

Find an internship, and I don't mean at a local restaurant. Look for something specific to what you want to do long-term. Having real world experience in your field of study is the best way to secure a full-time position when you graduate.
