Andrew J. Houvouras IV, MA, BCBA
Bio
“Science is a gift to humanity.” While Andrew Houvouras does not claim to be the originator of this phrase, it encapsulates his appreciation for science in general and the many benefits derived from the science of human behavior, applied behavior analysis (ABA). As a masters student, Andrew was introduced to ABA by his graduate school advisor, Joe Wyatt. “Like so many clinicians and teachers, I was looking for answers about how I could help people. The books I was reading, at the time, weren’t providing me the inspiration or answers. When I learned about ABA, I knew I had found my way.”
After graduating, Andrew became certified as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) where he began applying behavior science to help reduce problem behavior, teach adaptive skills, and develop systemic changes to promote positive behavior change. In 2007, the late, Jose Martinez-Diaz asked Andrew to teach in the online ABA program. "I come from a family of teachers and love to teach. Jose gave me an opportunity I have cherished for 17 plus years. I plan to teach as long as the team thinks the students are benefitting from it." Having worked with both children and adults in residential treatment and spending over seventeen years working in the public school system, Andrew now serves as the Director of Experiential Training in the world-renowned School of Behavior Analysis at the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). “As someone who loves ABA, getting to work with bright students and brilliant, committed faculty is an absolute dream come true.”
Andrew has long enjoyed writing, consults and speaks nationally and internationally, continues to pursue research with his colleagues at FIT, and is the author of the book The Lives of the Silent and a co-author to the best selling Quick Responses for Reducing Misbehavior and Suspensions. “I am grateful to share stories with others and the friendships I have made with my co-authors Paulie, Anika, Eric and Frank.”
An avid surfer, paddleboarder, and bodysurfer, Andrew enjoys hiking, being in or on the water as well as playing and watching several sports. Baseball has become a favorite pastime as his sons, Preston and Kooper, both play collegiately. He enjoys reading, movies, and walking the beach to see and photograph sunrises with his French Bulldog, Poppy.
