Graduate Credit for Short Courses
Effective Date Jun 23, 2008
(Graduate Policy 4.6)
The following applies specifically to all courses that meet in other than the standard time formats.
Lecture classes in a time-shortened version will have a requirement of 15 contact hours for award of one semester credit. For the purpose of determining credits awarded, the maximum lecture contact hours will be six hours in any one day.
Laboratory or field courses will have a requirement of 45 contact hours for award of one semester credit. For the purpose of determining credits awarded, the maximum contact hours for laboratory or field courses will be eight hours in any one day.
A period of at least five day’s attendance is required for each semester credit awarded.
All courses taught in a time-shortened format should contain an evaluative component similar to what is used in a standard-format graduate course. Assignments and readings should be given and completed prior to the class meetings, and papers, project and/or examinations should be required before or after the class meetings. It is the evaluative component that differentiates a true course from a workshop.
A course approval form for each course to be taught in a time-shortened format must be submitted, in advance of being offered, for review and approval by the Graduate Council and dean of the appropriate college.
