Clinical Psychology, Psy.D.

In the Psy.D. program, you learn in a colleague-in-training environment within a small cohort of about 20 peers, fostering close mentorship, collaborative case discussion and increasing clinical responsibility. Students receive individual attention and often work directly with faculty on new or ongoing projects.

Faculty bring extensive clinical experience and board certifications, and many have held leadership roles in national and international professional organizations. With a range of theoretical orientations and active research programs, they offer students opportunities to explore advanced clinical and scholarly work.

Students are not limited to a single emphasis area and can develop an individualized plan of advanced coursework to meet their unique training goals. Psy.D. students may take courses in any emphasis area once prerequisites are met, and courses are staggered throughout the program to allow opportunities to explore multiple areas.

Psy.D. students can tailor their practicum experiences to align with their individual interests and professional goals.

Clinical training begins at Florida Tech’s on-campus Community Psychological Services (CPS), which provides care to clients from the Brevard County area with a broad range of mental health concerns.

After completing their CPS practicum under the supervision of full-time clinical faculty, students move on to advanced external practicums at a variety of inpatient and outpatient health facilities. With faculty guidance, students can select sites that expand their experience with specific populations or clinical issues.

Practicum opportunities allow students to provide individual, group, couples and family therapy, as well as psychological testing, in a range of settings, such as community mental health centers, local hospitals, university counseling centers, jails and courts, private practices and military bases.

At Florida Tech, Psy.D. students develop the skills to generate new knowledge, evaluate research critically and apply findings to real-world clinical challenges. Consistent with the practitioner-scholar model, students learn to design and carry out rigorous scholarly work, from literature reviews and efficacy studies to clinical case analyses and program development. 

Within Florida Tech’s vibrant research environment, students have opportunities to pursue innovative projects across a wide range of topics, such as child and family conflict, trauma and stress, adaptation to chronic illness, integrated healthcare, psychological assessment and the neuropsychological effects of aging and sports injuries.

The fifth year of the Psy.D. program consists of a 2,000-hour clinical internship. Florida Tech students have an outstanding record of matching with APA-approved internships, with nearly every student successfully placed. Internship placements occur at a variety of sites, including medical and psychiatric hospitals, outpatient medical and mental health facilities, university counseling centers, U.S. military care facilities, child treatment centers and veterans health facilities.

Florida Tech offers a safe, welcoming campus that supports personal well-being alongside intensive training in clinical psychology.

The campus features extensive green spaces, including the Joy and Gordon Patterson Botanical Garden, as well as facilities such as the Holzer Health Center and the Clemente Center for health, fitness and stress management.

Located just minutes from the Indian River Lagoon and 72 miles of Atlantic beaches, the university combines easy access to outdoor recreation with proximity to a wide range of practicum sites.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and, if it is not in psychology, have completed at least 18 credit hours of psychology coursework, including statistics, abnormal psychology, personality theory, learning, physiological psychology and social psychology.
